Invoice Generator for Spain (Factura)
By Harlequin Doyon
A Spanish factura is more prescriptive than invoices in most countries: it carries not just IVA but — for many autónomos billing businesses — an IRPF withholding that gets subtracted from the total. Speed Invoices handles both directions of tax on one invoice, in EUR, and lets you download the PDF free: no signup, no watermark, and your data stays in your browser.
What a factura must include
- A unique, sequential invoice number — a continuous series with no gaps.
- The issue date (and transaction date if different).
- Your details — full name or business name, NIF, and fiscal address.
- Your client's details — name, NIF/CIF, and address.
- A description of the goods or services.
- The base imponible — the taxable amount before any tax.
- IVA — standard rate 21%, with reduced rates of 10% and 4% for certain goods and services.
- IRPF retención, where it applies — and the final total.
IVA up, IRPF down: a worked example
This is the part that surprises people: IVA is added to your base, while IRPF retención is withheld by your business client and paid to Hacienda on your behalf. For a B2B service on a €1,000 base with the common 15% retención (new autónomos often use 7% in their first years):
- Base imponible: €1,000.00
- IVA (21%): +€210.00
- IRPF (15%): −€150.00
- Total the client pays: €1,060.00
You invoice €1,210 of value but receive €1,060 — the €150 difference is tax already paid for you. If you're an autónomo and want the full picture (when retención applies, which rate, exemptions), read our guide on how to invoice as an autónomo.
Building the factura in Speed Invoices
Set the currency to EUR, add IVA as a 21% tax line, and add the IRPF retención as a second, negative line — the total comes out right automatically, discounts included. Sequential numbering is configurable so your series stays unbroken, and you can add your logo, write rich-text descriptions, and choose a PDF template before downloading. Quotes, receipts, and credit notes come from the same editor.
For monthly retainer clients, Pro ($5/mo) adds recurring facturas, scheduled sends, and payment reminders; the editor and PDF download are free forever.
Invoicing elsewhere in the EU? Germany's USt system has its own quirks, including the Kleinunternehmer exemption.
