Australian Tax Invoice Generator
By Harlequin Doyon
In Australia, the document most businesses need to issue isn't just an invoice — if you're registered for GST, it's a Tax Invoice, and that exact wording matters. Speed Invoices lets you create one in AUD with your ABN and a 10% GST line, then download the PDF free: no signup, no watermark, and everything stays in your browser.
What an Australian tax invoice includes
- The words "Tax Invoice" — required when you're GST-registered.
- Your identity and ABN — your business name plus your Australian Business Number.
- Your customer's details — name, and for larger invoices typically their address or ABN too.
- The date the invoice was issued.
- A unique invoice number — sequential numbering keeps your records tidy.
- Line items — a description of each item sold, with quantity and price.
- The GST amount — shown separately, or a clear statement that the total includes GST.
Not registered for GST? You still invoice with your ABN, but you don't add GST and you don't use the "Tax Invoice" label — a plain invoice is fine.
How GST works on the invoice
GST in Australia is a flat 10% added on top of your price. Say a web developer bills A$2,000 for a project:
- Subtotal: A$2,000.00
- GST (10%): +A$200.00
- Total: A$2,200.00
The GST amount is what you report and remit; keeping it as a separate line on every invoice makes your BAS-time bookkeeping much easier.
Setting it up in Speed Invoices
- Set the currency to AUD (one of 46 supported currencies).
- Put your ABN in your business details and title the document "Tax Invoice".
- Add a GST 10% tax line — totals calculate automatically, discounts included.
- Add your logo, pick a PDF template, and download.
Invoice numbering is configurable, so you can match whatever series you already use. The same tool also generates quotes, receipts, credit notes, and purchase orders.
If you bill the same clients every month, Pro ($5/mo) adds recurring invoices, scheduled sends, and payment reminders — the editor and PDF download stay free forever.
Trading across the Tasman? GST works similarly but at a different rate in New Zealand, and quite differently under VAT in the UK.
