New Zealand Tax Invoice Generator

By Harlequin Doyon

New Zealand keeps invoicing refreshingly simple: one nationwide GST rate, one registration number, and a well-understood "Tax Invoice" format. Speed Invoices lets you put one together in NZD — GST line, IRD-issued GST number, your logo — and download the PDF free. No signup, no watermark, and your data stays in your browser.

What to put on an NZ tax invoice

  • The words "Tax Invoice" — the conventional label when you're GST-registered.
  • Your name or trading name and your GST number (issued by the IRD).
  • Your customer's name and details.
  • The date of issue.
  • A unique invoice number — keep the sequence consistent from invoice to invoice.
  • Line items — what was supplied, quantities, and prices.
  • GST shown clearly — either as a separate amount or with a statement that the total is GST-inclusive.

If you're not GST-registered — plenty of small operators aren't — you issue a plain invoice: no GST line, no "Tax Invoice" label, just your amounts and the total.

The 15% GST calculation

GST in New Zealand is 15%, added on top of your price. For a photographer billing NZ$2,000 for a shoot:

  • Subtotal: NZ$2,000.00
  • GST (15%): +NZ$300.00
  • Total: NZ$2,300.00

Some businesses quote GST-inclusive prices instead; either way, the invoice should make the GST treatment obvious so both sides' GST returns line up.

Creating yours in Speed Invoices

Set the currency to NZD, add your GST number to your business details, and drop in a 15% GST tax line — the totals recalculate automatically, and discounts are handled too. Rich-text descriptions let you spell out exactly what was delivered, invoice numbering is configurable to match your existing series, and you can choose between PDF templates before downloading.

Quotes, receipts, credit notes, and purchase orders come out of the same editor, so your whole paper trail matches.

Regular billing?

Everything above is free forever. Pro ($5/mo) adds recurring invoices, scheduled sends, payment reminders, and sending from your own domain — handy for monthly retainers.

Working with clients across the ditch? Australia uses a 10% GST with an ABN instead of a GST number, and the UK runs on VAT — see those pages for the differences.
