Invoice Template for Electricians
By Harlequin Doyon
An electrician's paperwork should be as tidy as their consumer unit. Speed Invoices gives you a free invoice template you can fill in from the van and download as a professional PDF — no signup, no watermark, and your customer details stay private in your browser.
Breaking down an electrical invoice
Electrical work spans ten-minute fixes and week-long installs, so the invoice needs to flex. Line items that customers and site managers expect to see:
- First-hour / call-out charge — many electricians charge a higher first hour instead of a separate call-out fee; either way, make it explicit.
- Labour — "Labour, 6 hrs — first fix, kitchen extension" or a day rate line for longer jobs.
- Materials — "Twin & earth 2.5mm, 25m", "Double sockets x6", "10-way consumer unit" — listed so the customer can see where the money went.
- Testing and certification — inspection, testing and certificates as their own line; it's skilled work, so charge for it visibly.
- Out-of-hours or emergency uplift — a separate line keeps the standard rate honest.
Automatic totals mean labour, materials, tax and any discount are summed for you — no calculator on the dashboard.
Day rates, first fix and stage payments
Small domestic jobs are usually hourly with payment on completion. Rewires and new installations are normally quoted as a fixed price and billed in stages — commonly a materials deposit up front, a payment at first fix, and the balance after second fix and testing. For builder and contractor work, expect to invoice on day rates, often on 14- or 30-day terms; put the agreed terms and due date on the invoice so there's no ambiguity.
A getting-paid tip specific to the trade
Hold the certificate until the balance clears — and say so on the invoice. Customers often need the electrical certificate for their building control sign-off, house sale or landlord file. A polite line — "Certification issued on receipt of payment" — is the most effective payment reminder an electrician can send.
Regular contract work?
If you invoice the same letting agency or facilities company every month, Pro ($5/mo) adds recurring invoices, scheduled sends and payment reminders, plus sending from your own domain. The invoice editor and PDF download are free forever, for every job.
On mixed jobs you'll often be quoting alongside other trades — there's a matching invoice template for plumbers if you work in a pair.
