Musicians rarely have one income stream, and the invoice should flex with them:

• Live performance — quartet, wedding ceremony + drinks reception (fixed performance fee)
• Extra set / overtime — agreed rate per additional 30 or 60 minutes
• Session work — 3 hrs recording, two songs (hourly or per-track)
• Teaching — 4 × 60-minute lessons, June (bill lesson blocks monthly)
• Travel and accommodation — mileage or agreed flat amount for out-of-town dates

How music work usually pays

• Private events (weddings, parties): deposit at booking — often 20–50% — balance due before the event or on the day. Never leave the balance to "sometime after".
• Venues and promoters: fee agreed in advance, invoice on the night or next morning; smaller venues often pay same-night, larger operations on 14–30 day terms.
• Session and studio work: invoice the studio or artist on delivery; per-song or per-hour, with any usage terms noted.
• Teaching: invoice blocks of lessons upfront per month or half-term — it protects you from no-shows.

The musician's getting-paid tip

Agree the fee in writing before the gig, and invoice within 24 hours after it. A short email — date, venue, sets, fee, deposit terms — becomes the spec your invoice mirrors, so there's nothing to dispute. Then send the PDF while the promoter still remembers how good the night was. Function bands can borrow the deposit discipline that DJs use for event bookings; the events world expects it.
